The Situation

Powerful corporations in the finance and technology industries, the de facto gatekeepers of modern speech platforms, were adopting political groupthink and discouraging and censoring viewpoints with which they disagreed.

To counter this widespread trend, the world’s largest legal non-profit that advocates for religious freedom and freedom of speech began a project to objectively rate companies on their proclivity toward diverse thinking and freedom of speech.

A great product idea like this needed a quality design and user experience or it would fall flat on its face.

The non-profit engaged Fabius Labs to create an attractive, dynamic website to display company ratings and share models of policies, research, and toolkits to encourage diverse thinking and freedom of speech.

The Approach

It was time to design and develop an attractive, engaging, and dynamic website for this project.

1. Web Design.

First, we worked with the non-profit to translate the project's goals into the overall design aesthetic (the look-and-feel) of the site and a logo for the project.

Next, we constructed the site's wireframes and received the nonprofit’s feedback.

Then came the high-fidelity designs. Specifically, we designed an interactive dashboard for each company rated and profiled and a search engine results page (SERP) to allow users to easily search among many different companies.

2. Web Development

Due to the sensitive nature of the project and its relatively complex site requirements, our team custom built the site using a NEXT.js and React framework.

To uniquely display the company score data, we designed the client's database and developed a data pipeline process to ingest the data.

The Results

The client's site and program launched in May 2022 with spectacular success. It gained national news coverage and has begun shaping the national public discourse around freedom of speech and diversity of thinking in Corporate America.

The project won a $100,000 Innovation Prize award.
The project and website were profiled in the Wall Street Journal.
